Notably, we picked the 2018 BMW X1 as one of Edmunds' Best Luxury SUVs for 2018. Overall, though, the 2018 BMW X1's functional and sporty characteristics warrant a solid recommendation. Also, technology features that are standard or packaged together in got-to-have option groups, such as parking sensors and Apple CarPlay connectivity, are stand-alone options, so double-check your build sheet before committing to the car. Although noise levels are no worse than others, the harsh ride over bumpy surfaces may leave drivers wishing for a softer setup. For one, the same sticky tire and sporty suspension setup that keeps the chassis stable and stuck in the turns also transmits high frequency bumps and noise into the cabin. But the X1 isn't all about sportiness its 40/20/40-split rear seatback increases flexibility for carrying large or bulky items and people at the same time.īut there some downsides to having a performance crossover. Either powertrain combination is lively yet smooth, and the X1 can zip to 60 mph in a class-leading 6.5 seconds. It starts with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (228 hp, 258 lb-ft) sending power to either the front or, optionally, all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The only thing I miss is the fact I went from a midsize (borderline large) car into a subcompact - You can feel the squeeze into the smaller seats, but that comes with the territory of owning a Bimmer without breaking the bank (or for that matter, feeling like a soccer dad). Handling, gas mileage, and acceleration are all similar to or better than my old 4-cylinder Accord. As far as price, the sticker might shock you when you try and equip it with Honda/Acura-spec tech, but unlike the former, BMW offers massive incentives which saved me more than 20% the price of the vehicle. As a major mid-life crisis plus, it sits lower to the ground than its competitors (I shafted the otherwise much faster and sportier Acura RDX because it made me feel like a complete soccer dad). After a pathological amount of online research, the X1 fit my bill. So I … ventured for a sporty compact AWD crossover - with a badge even better than the Mustang's. and to satisfy that crisis knowing that my first replacement choice (a Mustang!) wasn't going to be practical given my town's winters and my uh.potential future responsibilities. Entering a stereotypical male mid-life crisis, it was time for some major car- (and soul-) searching, whereby I decided to replace my incumbent car, a 2-door Honda Accord, with something equally sporty.

Now we get to the part of the review that really matters in a Ronin review. If you are into quick, precise handling swords, the Ronin Dojo Pro Ko-katana will not disappoint. The tsuka is nicely shaped, with a ergonomic taper that just feels terrific in the hand. With a POB of less than four inches and a 11 inch tsuka on a 23 inch blade you know it is going to be fast. Handling is what a ko-katana like this is really all about. The saya is perfectly fit, without a trace of rattle. The black sageo is a nice upgrade over even many more expensive swords, and it threads through the kurigata through blackened shitodome. The horn has patterns which make for a beautiful accent to the saya. The saya is piano lacqured black, and sports buffalo horn kurigata, koiguchi and kogiri. Ronin is one of a very few companies that build a habaki this properly, and that is even scarcer at this price range. The habaki has a dual finish, filed and polished, with dual separating grooves. The sword is mounted with nice key fret brass seppa, and a brass habaki. The tsuba has a "distressed " or hammered finish which is a fairly good representation of tekkotsu on antique tsuba. The tsuba is also blackened iron (read mild steel) and in an inazuma (lightning) sukashi theme. The fuchigashira are blackened iron and the kashira sports matching black shitodome. The 11.25 inch tsuka is panelled with black samegawa and wrapped with 10 inches of black silk ito, "to appeal to the ninja in all of us" as Chris told me. 5 of an inch and a nicely pronounced fumbari. The 23 inch blade is through hardened 1060 spring steel, polshed to an even satin all over. The kissaki itself swells geometrically to a reinforced diamond shaped tip. The yokote is accomplished with counterpolishing. The sugata is shinogi zukuri with chu kissaki. If I haven't then perhaps you shouldn't read any further, but for those of you that know me, read on and I'll tell you about the Ronin Dojo Pro Ko-Katana. I think that I have earned a reputation of fairness and integrity and impartiality with most of you. I also am the author of over 50 sword reviews and have donated my time on several community websites. In addition to this, I am also a senior staffer at SBG, where Paul sells Ronin Katana in the SBG Store. I mean have you seen the destructive tests I did for Ronin Katana? If not, why don't you head on over to their YouTube page and check it out? They can also be found on my Youtube channel for Torion Sword It was my reviews which convinced me to do so. But I can say that this is the first Ronin review I've written sice becoming a rep. After so much extensive testing and reviews of Ronin Katana models I couldn't help but want to sell them. I have a website and I have been selling these as a hobby for the last few months. I do have a business relationship with Ronin Katana. Once again these things fly off the shelves. Ronin Katana, famous for their line of tough well built Dojo Pro cutters, introduces a new Dojo Pro ko-katana. as these things are hard to come by.įast forward to 2012. and so went the possibility of ever getting another decent kokatana. After the review I sold that one, thinking I could buy another later. and when doing so, I was amazed at how much fun these ko-katana were. Not interested in such a girly little sword, I sold it (for way less that I should) without even trying it out.Ī year or two later I had gotten into writing reviews, and got another kokatana from the same manufacturer to review. So when I messaged wanting compensation for the mistake, i was informed that the mistake was in my favor, as the sword was a 1070 differentially hardened ko-katana (first quality). but quite short despite the normal tsuka. There was a sword in there that was in a full size saya. When the shipment came, going through the boxes I came across one sword that was quite different. While exploring this world I began chatting with a now defunct sword vendor who offered to sell me some 1050 through hardened seconds he had for an incredible price, as long as I bought 5. Sword length that is.Ībout 6 or 7 years ago, I was just discovering the blossoming world of production katana, thanks to finally coming out of the dark ages and getting online. Being a somewhat tall guy, I really thought that the length should match. Seriously, laugh if you want, but years ago I was really hung up on size. Be aware that the MODX does not have after touch (but it will receive it). My own responses to your questions (noting that the MODX is the mostly same engine as the Montage)Ĭan't comment, as the MODX keybed is different to the Montage. They are quite different beasts in terms of sound character. I have a Montage 7 and Kronos X 61 and I like both of them. Hi, there is lots of discussion and active topics on the MODX over on Yamaha Musicians Forum, and the general consensus is that most people are happy with the MODX - a cracking product at a good price point. I personally don't think the montage/modx measure up to the Kronos sound wise, but I know that they're are people who do So then I went and tried out a Kronos and was instantly sold(plus it has an onboard sampler), wow sounded amazing, but you might think the opposite. I did, was not impressed and returned it, just didn't give me the warm gitty feeling the original motif series did for some reason, really loved the on board sampler(saturation!) that the motif had and I was aware that modx did not have one(it can load samples but thats not the same) but still decided to try it out. Conditioning the spectrogram decoder on this encoding makes it possible to synthesize speech with similar speaker characteristics, even though the content is in a different language. The speaker encoder is pretrained on the speaker verification task, learning to encode speaker characteristics from a short example utterance. This feature leverages previous Google research on speaker verification and speaker adaptation for TTS. You can listen to more audio samples here.īy incorporating a speaker encoder network, Translatotron is also able to retain the original speaker’s vocal characteristics in the translated speech, which makes the translated speech sound more natural and less jarring. In this case, both systems provide a suitable translation and speak naturally using the same canonical voice. Though our results lag behind a conventional cascade system, we have demonstrated the feasibility of the end-to-end direct speech-to-speech translation.Ĭompared in the audio clips below are the direct speech-to-speech translation output from Translatotron to that of the baseline cascade method. We validated Translatotron’s translation quality by measuring the BLEU score, computed with text transcribed by a speech recognition system. However, no transcripts or other intermediate text representations are used during inference. During training, the sequence-to-sequence model uses a multitask objective to predict source and target transcripts at the same time as generating target spectrograms. It also makes use of two other separately trained components: a neural vocoder that converts output spectrograms to time-domain waveforms, and, optionally, a speaker encoder that can be used to maintain the character of the source speaker’s voice in the synthesized translated speech. Translatotron is based on a sequence-to-sequence network which takes source spectrograms as input and generates spectrograms of the translated content in the target language. Translatotron goes a step further by demonstrating that a single sequence-to-sequence model can directly translate speech from one language into speech in another language, without relying on an intermediate text representation in either language, as is required in cascaded systems. Many approaches to further improve end-to-end speech-to-text translation models have been proposed recently, including our effort on leveraging weakly supervised data. In 2017, we demonstrated that such end-to-end models can outperform cascade models. The emergence of end-to-end models on speech translation started in 2016, when researchers demonstrated the feasibility of using a single sequence-to-sequence model for speech-to-text translation. Dubbed Translatotron, this system avoids dividing the task into separate stages, providing a few advantages over cascaded systems, including faster inference speed, naturally avoiding compounding errors between recognition and translation, making it straightforward to retain the voice of the original speaker after translation, and better handling of words that do not need to be translated (e.g., names and proper nouns). In “ Direct speech-to-speech translation with a sequence-to-sequence model”, we propose an experimental new system that is based on a single attentive sequence-to-sequence model for direct speech-to-speech translation without relying on intermediate text representation. Dividing the task into such a cascade of systems has been very successful, powering many commercial speech-to-speech translation products, including Google Translate. Such systems have usually been broken into three separate components: automatic speech recognition to transcribe the source speech as text, machine translation to translate the transcribed text into the target language, and text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) to generate speech in the target language from the translated text. Speech-to-speech translation systems have been developed over the past several decades with the goal of helping people who speak different languages to communicate with each other.
