![]() ![]() It's like all the ingredients are there but the cake's still that tiny bit under-baked. ![]() This combat system never quite hits the heights it promises. One boss called Ivy more or less has to be fought with melee, and will grab you with a one-shot QTE attack multiple times during the fight, making for an incredibly frustrating experience. No way do I want to have to successfully pull off a quickfire QTE four minutes into a five-minute fight or insta-fail. Several boss fights feature incredibly frustrating QTEs. Special praise to an animation the androids have, where sometimes you'll blast them with a shot and they're knocked back by the impact, but uncannily flip-out of it and land in a starter's position ready to sprint at you. Despite my criticisms of the upgrade paths the combat is often exciting and tense, and some of the effects you can pull off-such as lifting half-a-dozen androids into the air, chain-electrocuting the lot, then smashing them down on the ground and launching a rocket-both look and feel fantastic. It's bursting with ideas, and some of them are great and some are just ballast that only end up making the good stuff weaker. (Image credit: Mundfish) Fight for the Motherland The one occasion I did do this was to build a specific weapon for an annoying boss, and it worked, but I didn't especially like the weapon and ended up just deconstructing it again after the fight. ![]() The idea is clearly that players should swap around and experiment with playstyles, but the cumbersome interface and its tiny icons mean the process is no pleasure, and most of the enemies don't encourage or demand this flexibility. The game pretty much acknowledges this by including a system that refunds all resources for deconstructing any item. In Atomic Heart I saw no point building a new tool or weapon without having the resources to immediately upgrade it several times. There were only a few rungs of the upgrade ladder to climb with plasmids in BioShock, but each one felt more substantial, and crucially the basic versions felt powerful and good to use in and of themselves. But it annoys me to no end that it feels so underpowered and, as I progressed through the upgrade tree, I was incrementally gaining abilities that the BioShock power it copied came with as standard. I don't mind that Atomic Heart copies the electro bolt plasmid. But using all this junk to painstakingly build and upgrade weapons means most of your equipment and attacks are unimpressive until you can grind enough loot to give them more oomph. You can similarly schloop the resources out of downed foes (whose bodies or parts convulse as the bits fly out), and whatever you're looting there's a lovely glimpse of the shiny bits flying towards you: You instantly have a sense when you've scored something good. In fact I enjoy it so much I think opening space cupboards individually in Starfield is going to drive me mad. Remember the scene in Ghostbusters where the library cards start flying out of the drawers? In Atomic Heart you trigger this effect constantly and so far it hasn't gotten old. Throughout the game you're wearing a sentient super-glove, and everything you point it at will open and the goodies will zoom towards you. One reason for this is how hard Atomic Heart leans into collecting and crafting. But ultimately no matter how you choose to skin Atomic Hearts' android enemies, combat lacks the heft of its inspirations. You can customise your weapons into various damage types (electrical damage for robots, bleed damage for organic foes) and secondary effects like knockback or AoE. The combat has fairly standard basics (a melee weapon, a pistol, a shotgun, a grenade launcher) but is made nuanced by some great individual twists, like the zappy pistol you can upgrade into a death-dealing chargeable shock beam. ![]() The difference is that Atomic Heart's electric shock feels… well, like it's just giving things a tickle. BioShock starts you off with a wrench and an electric shock attack called electro bolt, and Atomic Heart does more or less the same but with an axe. ![]()

![]() ![]() The only real question mark over which some have opined at length is whether Redline has what it takes to be a so-called "break-out" movie that lures those from outside of anime fandom into our cosy confines. This is backed up by the sheer imagination of the film's visuals and design - not only does it pack out its universe with inventive characters (some of whom are making cameos from previous works directed by Takeshi Koike, most notably Trava and Shinkai from the Trava: Fist Planet OVA), it still finds the time to build the world and its mythology further as the movie progresses to draw you into its vision. In these terms it succeeds with an almost terrifying exactitude - it seems to know exactly what to provide the viewer and when, and it's utterly engaging from first minute to last as a result. Never mind analysis of its plot or objectives, watching Redline can be described simply as "an experience" - it's a movie designed to make you feel rather than think to thrill you rather than provoke discussion. By the film's climax you find yourself straining every muscle as you try to will the Redline's potential winner across the line, and it's at that point you realise just how gripped you've been by the whole thing before the film's beautiful ending theme soothes the excited tension that's built up within you over the previous hour and a half. As per the start of the movie, this is an eye-popping visual spectacle from beginning to end that eschews realistic physics or any kind of common sense in deference to over the top insanity and pure, simple lowbrow entertainment, backed up by a thumping techno soundtrack - and boy does it work a treat. Thus, the final act of the film is an almost non-stop barrage of racing, running and gunning as the assortment of Redline racers try to win the biggest prize in the universe without being blown to smithereens by their enraged hosts. Whether it's via TV-style introductions to the other racers which inform and entertain in equal measure or a peek into the covert preparations for the race, there's always something to keep your interest.įinally though, we come to the big event itself - the Redline, hosted against their will by the planet of Roboworld a host with a strong desire for peace according to their words but an even stronger desire to unleash the full force of their massed weaponry upon the Redline's competitors according to their actions. JP and Sonoshee's relationship never feels forced or over-bearing, nor does it ever outstay its welcome as we frequently shift our attention to other competitors and the more general build-up to the Redline itself. It's the relationship between Sonoshee and JP which occupies a fair portion of the film's middle section, as it almost flawlessly walks the tightrope placed between the aforementioned Yellowline and titular Redline faces which book-end the movie. Our focus as we're taken into the film's slightly crazy world is a racer who goes by the name of JP, as on the one hand we explore his relationship with mechanic and long-serving friend Frisbee as the latter wheels and deals in race fixing to pay off old debts, while on the other we find a burgeoning love interest for our quiff-sporting hero in Sonoshee McLaren, a fellow racer with more interest in machines than men. ![]() While Redline could get by quite easily by simply feeding us adrenaline-pumping race after race for the entirety of its running time, it nonetheless does offer us a couple of on-going plot threads across the course of the movie. For the next ten minutes we're treated to a fireball of colour, movement, noise, blood, sweat and tears, all of which are animated with an often stunning eye for detail and a superb appreciation of how to convey the feeling of movement and intense speed, occasionally in some rather innovative ways. ![]() As the race enters its final stretch, we soon get a taste of what this form of sport is all about - an anything goes blend of Wacky Races meets Cannonball Run, but with missiles and harpoons. In all honesty, the best advice to any potential buyers of Redline would be to find a way to watch its first twelve minutes, which sees us joining a gathering crowd of weird and wonderful creatures from around the galaxy before both they and us are blown-away by the arrival of a motley crew of racers currently engaging in a road race known as the Yellowline. Reviewing Redline for its physical UK release is actually rather a daunting prospect for a couple of reasons - firstly, on account of the ever-swirling hype around this animated movie which spent so many years in the making, and secondly because it's such a visually arresting film that trying to sum up its impact and appeal in words alone is a challenge in itself. ![]() ![]() “All curriculums (prekindergarten through 12th grade) will go hand in hand over time leading to a richer PBL learning environment and culture.” “It’s rich with resources and guides, and our staff will receive a lot of training on just this curriculum,” Board Treasurer Emily Hutcheson-Brown said. The National Traumatic Stress Network (NTSN) defines secondary stress as the emotional duress that occurs as a result of one individual that hears about the traumatic experiences of another individual firsthand. ![]() ![]() DanTest, a company that manufactures products that measure physiological responses, says that untreated chronic stress “has been linked to the onset and development of a multitude of physical, behavioral, and mental ailments including diabetes, depression, migraines, hypertension, oncological formations, gastric ulcers, heart pathology, and more.” Secondary Trauma Chronic stress exacerbates the dispatcher’s physiological reactions. Emergency dispatchers take so many calls in quick succession that they take the stress home with them, go to bed with it, and wake up with it the next morning. When stress is increased in quantity and degree, it grows accumulatively and causes a type of stress called cumulative stress. Smith adds that destructive behaviors such as apathy, isolation, and substance abuse come to the surface when caregivers fail to practice self-care. Smith defines compassion fatigue as “symptoms of normal displays of chronic stress resulting from the care giving work we choose to do.” Dispatching emergency teams to crisis callers certainly falls into that definition. Compassion fatigue is vicarious traumatization-the emotional strain of those that help others going through a traumatic event. Patricia Smith, founder of The Compassion Fatigue Awareness Project, says that caring too much can hurt. To better understand the impact of stress on the emergency dispatcher, consider the types of stress that comes with this type of work. Nearly every occupation involves some degree of stress. Emergency dispatchers have the disadvantage of an on-the-job hazard with a triple threat of stress. The stress encompasses sharing the caller’s trauma, compounding that stress with repeated calls, and suffering the after effects of secondary trauma. By the time the scene has cleared, emergency dispatchers may have taken a dozen more crisis calls with no time in between to decompress their adrenalin and emotions. When emergency responders arrive on the scene, the caller gets immediate help in resolving the crisis. Behind the soothing voice, adrenalin is pumping full force, as the dispatcher struggles to find the balance between hope and fear.Ī 2014 report by the Office of the Auditor in the city and county of Denver showed that the average response time for a priority 9-1-1 call was just under 13 minutes. For the length of the call, the emergency dispatcher is the voice of calm that assists the caller in managing the crisis until help arrives. The response from the caller is usually a frantic, distraught voice of someone who needs help right away. The dispatcher answers the call and calmly asks what the emergency is. Every 9-1-1 call begins exactly the same. ![]() ![]() In addition to eating, however, we cannot forget being satisfied.
